VNPT deploys 10G fiber broadband in Vietnam with Nokia

Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications (VNPT) has deployed 10G fiber broadband in Vietnam in collaboration with Nokia.

The initial phase of this rollout will connect approximately 10,000 homes and businesses across eight major provinces in Vietnam. Nokia will provide fiber access nodes for the operator’s exchanges and fiber modems for end users’ premises.

Vietnam has been rapidly expanding its fiber broadband infrastructure. In September 2021, the Ministry of Information and Communications of Vietnam launched the National Digital Transformation Program, aiming to ensure that 80 percent of households and 100 percent of communes in the country are covered by fiber internet infrastructure by 2025.

VNPT currently holds the market leader position with a 39.5 percent market share in 2022, according to the Vietnam Telecom Operators Country Intelligent Report by Global Data.

In addition to home internet services, VNPT also offers mobile and pay-TV services. The transition to a multi-gig network will allow VNPT to differentiate its services and maintain its leadership position.

With this new technology, VNPT will be able to provide customers with a wide range of speeds, up to 10 Gb/s, without the need for additional fiber construction.

Dang Anh Son, CEO at VNPT Net Corporation, said that this project marks the initial step toward offering high-quality FTTx services to meet the increasing bandwidth and service demands of residential and business customers.

He further mentioned plans to collaborate with Nokia on deploying cloud-based network management systems for XGS-PON, as well as enhancing customer experiences through digital transformation solutions.

Ruben Moron Flores, Head of Market Unit Vietnam at Nokia, said the Asia Pacific region is the largest in the world for fiber broadband. “Nokia’s multi-gig and multi-PON solution provides exceptional flexibility and scalability,” he said.

The Nokia 7360-FX Lightspan series access node (OLT) and the Nokia Quillion Chipset are utilized in this deployment. The Nokia 7360-FX Lightspan is a high-capacity access node designed for large-scale fiber rollouts. It connects numerous users via optical fiber, aggregates their broadband traffic, and transmits it further into the network. This fiber access node supports various fiber technologies, including GPON, XGS-PON, 25GS-PON, and Point-to-Point Ethernet.

Nokia’s Quillion chipset is adopted by over 250 operators. It offers multi-PON capabilities, supporting GPON, XGS-PON, and 25G PON on the same fiber. The Quillion chipset reduces energy consumption, requiring 50 percent less power for fiber installations compared to previous generations.
